Warm Weather Maintenance for Fireplaces

Spring is in the air, and though the season may give your fireplace an amount of rest, there are still things that you should do to maintain your fireplace for optimum efficiency and safety. Here are a few things that you can do to maintain that perfect and functional fixture in your home:

  • Wood Burning Fireplace:

Cleanliness is the perfect maintenance for a wood burning fireplace. Make sure you take this time to vacuum out all the ash from the firebox, and remove any residual soot from the walls and lower part of the chimney. The spring and summer are also the perfect times to have your chimney examined for its annual maintenance. Every year, thousands of house fires are started in the chimney do to improper maintenance, so it is of most importance that your chimney is expected and cleaned by a professional at least once a year. This warm weather brings the perfect time for this to be done by one of the professionals in New Jersey’s A&J Fireplaces.

  • Gas Fireplaces:

You won’t have to worry about the ash, but there is still other things that have to be done with a gas fireplace. After the gas valves are turned to the off position, and the gas is completely cool, remove the front face of the fireplace, and carefully remove the glass assembly. It is probably best if you follow the owner’s manual during these steps. Place the glass on a soft surface and wipe down both sides of the glass with a soft cloth and a cleaner designed specifically for this purpose. Before putting the glass back on the fireplace unit, clean the inside from any dust or dirt with a soft brush or a vacuum.  You also should inspect your fireplace for any damage, rust, or flaking. Make sure you call a dealer, like A&JFireplaces, if any replacement part are needed.
